ing funds of the all Galway GAA squads as they prepare for their tilt at championship glory in the coming weeks.

Supermac’s and Galway GAA have one of the longest running sponsorship relationships in Irish sport and a new 5-year deal was announced earlier this year. Supermac’s began sponsoring Galway hurling in 1991 and subsequently became the sponsor for all Galway football and hurling. The deal means that Supermac’s will sponsor all Galway Adult and Youth Intercounty Teams in Football and Hurling until 2022. Supermac’s also sponsor the Galway Ladies Football and Camogie teams,
“We are delighted to be able to help our county teams to prepare their upcoming semi-finals,’ Supermac’s MD, Pat McDonagh, said. “For every litre of fuel that customers purchase at The Galway Plaza we will contribute 1 cent to the training fund and every time a bottle of water is purchased in a Supermac’s outlet in Galway we will contribute 10 cents to the training fund. We understand and respect the commitment that the players give every year and the costs of running a modern inter-county team is increasing every year,” he said. “It is important that we, as supporters, do all we can to help them achieve their goals.”

The campaign is being supported by Texaco and Clada Water.

Glan agus Glas (Clean and Green) at Supermac’s & Papa John’s

We are delighted to announce that we will introduce 100% recyclable cups, paper straws and create Green Teams in each outlet as part of a major initiative to Go Green. The country’s largest quick service family restaurant will make 5 key changes as part of  its Glan agus Glas (Clean and Green) initiative:

  1. 100% recyclable cups
  2. Paper straws to replace plastic straws
  3. Biodegradable burger wrap
  4. Introduction of dispensers for sachets and napkins
  5. Creation of Green Teams in each outlet

The announcement was made by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, Denis Naughten T.D. at the official opening of the newly redeveloped Casey’s Service Station in Roscommon Town. “We recognize the strain that single use plastics are having on our environment and that every little bit counts,” Supermac’s MD Pat McDonagh said.  “We undertook a trial period of a number of initiatives in our Westport outlet and following on from that as well as a consultation process with our staff, I am delighted to announce the Glan agus Glas initiative. These are real initiatives and not targets,” he said. “We have already started working with Irish companies in Ennis and Belfast to supply the Glan agus Glas programme and customers will see these changes immediately. All of our cups will be 100% recyclable by September, our burger wrap is biodegradable and we will start the process of introducing paper straws immediately.”

Announcing the our Supermac’s Go Green initiative at Casey’s in Roscommon Town the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten stated:

“Plastic waste is a global crisis and it takes leadership and action from all of us, collectively and individually, in order to tackle this problem and reduce the generation of plastic waste in our environment. Supermacs is leading by example by taking practical measures such as replacing plastic straws with paper straws, 100% recyclable cups and bio-degradable wrapping. I am extremely pleased to see these new changes being introduced across their 110 outlets. I am confident the Glan agus Glas initiative will bring a welcome reduction in the generation of plastic waste, greater environmental awareness and behavioural change particularly as the Green Teams begin their work.”

40 Years In Business And 40 Years Supporting Irish Farmers

Papa John’s are delighted to announce that Supermac’s has committed to spending €32million on Irish produce in its 40th year in business. Supermac’s MD, Pat McDonagh has said that the same commitment to supporting Irish farmers that existed in 1978 still remains today.  “We are strongly committed to Irish farmers and the farming community in general.  We are 40 years in business this year and since we started in Ballinasloe in 1978 we have always looked to local suppliers wherever possible, be that for farm produce or construction materials,” Mr McDonagh said. “We still have some of the same suppliers that we had 40 years ago and that depth of relationship and the trust built up over the years is key to the success of our Fresh range. This is a very strong endorsement of the quality of Irish produce on Irish farms and I am proud to serve it in each of our restaurants,” he said. “Since we introduced our Fresh range of beef and chicken products customers have indicated that quality, taste and traceability are key factors when they are choosing their food. We work hard to let them know that our meat comes from Irish farms and supports Irish farm families.”

Supermac’s employs over 2,700 people throughout the country and also operates Papa John’s Pizza, SuperSubs and Macs Place Diners. The Só Hotel Group as well as the Claddagh Group of Pubs in the United States are also owned by Pat and Úna McDonagh.

The 5oz Burger, made famous by Irish rugby legend Sean O’ Brien, and the seasonal Festive 5oz over the Christmas period were a huge hit with customers. “We only use beef sourced from Irish Farmers,” Mr. McDonagh said. “Our 5oz burgers are made from prime cuts of beef and are cooked to order. This means that your burger or grilled chicken does not touch the grill until after you order. It is cooked fresh every time,” he said.

Padraig Kelly Galway Hurling Legend

There have been many Galway legends throughout the years. Some great names from this county echo through the halls of GAA lore and those names have been heard louder in recent times as Galway became All-Ireland champions for the 1st time in 29 years on a day in September that will live long in the memory.

Stories were told of the exploits of campaigns past and how the game has changed and how it used to take a week to come home from an All-Ireland back in the day. “Who was the greatest player you have ever seen?” became a topic of many a kitchen table discussion or heated debate while eating a Supermac’s after a match.

One of those names was Padraig Kelly of the great Sarsfield’s club of the 1990’s. He was considered worthy of Man of the Match in the All-Ireland final in 1993 despite being on the losing team. It was some performance. A performance that earned an accolade that has traditionally gone to a member of the winning side. That year was his second successive All Star and while his time in the maroon and white of Galway was short he made some impact.

This is his story of that game.

The story of a Galway legend.

The story of a Tribesman.

Well Hello 40!

Supermac’s are 40 this year!

Can you believe Supermac’s will celebrate our 40th year in business this summer. They are 40 years growing and still growing.

A lot has happened since the first store opened on Main St, Ballinalsoe in 1978!  In 1978 The Bee Gees were at Number 1`with ‘Stayin Alive’ and John Travolta and Olivia Newton John had just released ‘Grease’ in the cinema. Patrick Hillary was the President and Jack Lynch was An Taoiseach. The Late Late Show, Wanderly Wagon, The Riordans, Trom agus Eadrom and Sports Stadium were the main shows on TV and RTÉ launched a 2nd channel called RTÉ 2. It was also the 1st year that Coronation Street could be seen on Irish TV. Shergar won the Derby and the price of a pint of Guinness was £0.43p in old money. Kerry won the football, Cork won the hurling and Argentina won the World Cup. Hungry Hungry Hippo was the most popular Christmas present, there were 3 Popes and Pat McDonagh invented the Snack Box.
